We human beings produce a lot of food waste and loss. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations is observing their first International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste on September 29. It will be an online event – to learn more go to this link:  Day of Awareness

The FAO and the USDA have both committed their organizations to cutting in half the current amount of food waste and loss by 2030. This is a very aggressive goal but it’s something that needs to be done to help slow down climate change. In the podcast I explain how the FAO has created 2 new metrics which will be used by the FAO and USDA for measuring food loss and food waste going forward.

The current level of food waste and food loss produces 3.3 billion tons of greenhouse gas that goes up into the earth’s atmosphere which comes out of the landfills from the rotting food. The FAO is intent on increasing the efficiency in the way food is produced, distributed, and consumed.

In January 2020 the USDA released a report identifying most of the supply chain factors leading to 30-40% of our food supply being wasted. Among these are supermarkets and restaurants not wanting to buy food in that doesn’t meet their quality and appearance requirements. I understand but I think we (including me) are going to have to get over this.

Lastly I go through quite a few ways that we as consumers can lower our own levels of food loss and waste. They aren’t hard to do and they make a lot of sense. I hope they help you to contribute to bringing this global crisis under control.
