Why Mushrooms Are So Good For You

Today’s guest is Jeff Chilton, the owner of Nammex (North American Medicinal Mushroom Extracts). Jeff’s interest in mushrooms started when he was a student at the University of Washington in the late 1960’s. He became a mushroom grower in 1973 and in 1989 he founded his company Nammex which raises organically certified mushrooms for the Nutritional Supplement industry.

We had a very interesting (and long) conversation which I’m sure you’ll enjoy if you like to eat mushrooms and/or take mushroom supplements. I know that I sure enjoyed it and I learned a lot from it as well. It’s always so valuable to be able to talk to an “expert” and Jeff is definitely an expert on everything mushroom. He explained how and why mushrooms are not a vegetable nor a plant – they are in between in what Jeff calls “their own kingdom”.

I also learned why I’ve had allergic reactions to some mushroom supplements I’ve tried and what to look for when I go shopping for one again. We also talked about the many different kinds of mushrooms both to eat and to supplement with. Jeff explained how mushrooms are grown, their nutritional values, and how best to cook them. It really was a fascinating hour and will be well worth your time to listen to it all the way to the end.
